Fredrickson Had Them Covered

Dan Fredrickson definitely had a strong car at State Park Speedway. He set fast time in qualifying with a lap of 13.649 to edge out rookie contender Nick Barstad’s 13.651. Fredrickson would start the feature from the eleventh starting position due to his finish in the Top 16 Hedman Hedders Qualifier Race, but that would be his only blemish on the day. Fredrickson quickly worked his way around the field on the outside lane of the track and by lap 35 he would take the lead that he would never relinquish. A late caution made it a closer finish, but on this day Fredrickson definitely had them covered.

Touring Stars Results

The 2013 Touring Stars program got a huge jumpstart with the announcement of the new team concept. Each of the team’s crews were sporting their new uniforms as well as getting use out of the sponsor’s products. Team i-gogs Sunglasses had the best overall results from the race.

Dan Fredrickson Picked up the first win in the program and the extra $100 for being the highest team i-gogs Sunglasses finisher.

Jonathan Eilen and Jeff Storm finished in third and fourth respectively. Rich Bickle was 15th and Andrew Morrissey was 18th.

Team DOC 360

Nathan Haseleu fared the best of team DOC 360 by finishing in fifth place. He recovered from an earlier spin with Team Vita Ice’s Skylar Holzhausen, who came home in sixth.

Chris Wimmer finished in 7th, while Jason Weinkauf came home in 17th.

Jeremy Miller scored a top ten finish by nabbing the tenth spot, while as mentioned earlier, Skylar Holzhausen finished in sixth.

Team Spiked Island

Cardell Potter started from the pole after winning the Top 16 Qualifier race and led laps early in the feature. Potter was running in the top three most of the race until contact with Mark Mackesy relegated him to the back of the pack of lead lap cars. Potter recovered to finish in 13th place.

Jacob Goede finished in the 9th position, while Chris Weinkauf wound up in 11th and James Swan in 16th.

Rookie Points Race Heats Up

Jeremy Miller was the highest finishing rookie winding up with a tenth place finish. James Swan is the rookie points leader, holding a 446 to 440 advantage over Bobby Kendall. Swan raced his way to a 16th place finish with Kendall ending up in 20th. Dennis Prunty is third in rookie points just ten behind Kendall. Prunty was up into the top ten when he was caught up in a spin with a freak occurrence ending his night. As Prunty spun into the infield off of turn four, he hit a man hole cover which broke the axle. Prunty would get credit for a 25th place finish. Nick Barstad had a great qualifying run but the race did not go as well, as Barstad would end up in 21st position.

Fredrickson Takes Over Points Lead

Fredrickson’s victory helped break the tie in overall points he shared with Jacob Goede entering the race at State Park Speedway. With Goede finishing in 8th place, Fredrickson now has a 32 point advantage heading into the next race on June 8th at Dells Raceway Park.

Dells Raceway Park Is Next Race On Deck

The next stop for the ARCA Midwest Tour is a trip to the Wisconsin Dells for a June 8th date at Dells Raceway Park. This marks the first event held at DRP since August of 2010, when Tim Schendel captured the checkers. Practice gets underway at 1:45pm with qualifying set to begin at 5pm. The autograph session will be at 6pm with racing action slated for a 7pm start.

Scores Second Consecutive ARCA Midwest Tour Win

Dan Fredrickson likes State Park Speedway. In fact, that was the first thing he said as he crawled out of his car in Victory Lane after picking up his second consecutive World Wide Packaging 125 win in the ARCA Midwest Tour presented by SCAG Power Equipment and Lester Buildings.

Then he quickly changed the conversation towards honoring the man that was on everyone’s mind, the legend, Dick Trickle.

“I really like this place,” said Fredrickson. “Obviously we’re all going to miss the guy. I don’t know what his situation was but I know it wasn’t simple. You know, it sucks.”

While paying homage to the legend was what everyone expected, what was also expected was that Fredrickson would come to dominate the field at the Wausau racetrack. What wasn’t expected was that a yellow with just two laps remaining erased Fredrickson’s huge lead.

Fredrickson had taken the lead back on lap 34 when he got around a fellow team i-gogs Sunglasses Touring Star, Jonathan Eilen. Fredrickson would easily stretch his lead to nearly a full straightaway as the race neared the break at lap 75.

Fredrickson took everyone by surprise after the break by electing to take the restart from the outside lane. It didn’t seem to matter as Fredrickson easily got a jump at the drop of the green flag and steadily pulled away from the field.

The only thing that seemed to temporarily derail Fredrickson’s march towards the checkers was a yellow flag that made people wonder if it were divine intervention. Just after lap 99 was completed, team Vita Ice Touring Star, Skylar Holzhausen and team DOC 360 Touring Star, Nathan Haseleu made contact in turn three with Haseleu getting turned into the outside wall.  Both drivers were contesting the fifth spot at the time, but being that it was lap 99 many thought that just maybe it was Dick Trickle’s way of looking down on the first race since his passing.

That was just a mere bump in the road, as Fredrickson would get another huge jump on the restart and pull away to a lead again. Another yellow with just two laps remaining proved to be just as futile for the rest of the field, as Fredrickson survived the late challenge from Tim Sauter to successfully defend his win at State Park Speedway.

Defending series champion Jonathan Eilen had a strong run all night and would wind up finishing in the third spot. Jeff Storm, another member of the team i-gogs Sunglasses Touring Stars was nearly lapped in the first half but ran a strong second half to come home in the fourth position. Nathan Haseleu recovered from his earlier spin to  finish in fifth.

Fredrickson Looks To Defend Race Win

ARCA Midwest Touring Star Dan Fredrickson is looking to defend last year’s win at State Park Speedway. Fredrickson battled Jonathan Eilen and Mark Mackesy down to the checkers to take the win. The battle with Eilen raged for most of the second half of the race, with Fredrickson holding on for the win.

Local Racer Looks To Make Mark

Mark Mackesy looks to continue his great runs at State Park Speedway. Last year’s third place finish coupled with his win in 2011 in this race shows he has the ability to race with the ARCA Midwest Touring Stars. Mackesy is a three time State Park Speedway track champion and has won all three of the track’s signature events. Mackesy has captured three Larry Detjens Memorials, to go along with a single win in both the Flip Merwin and Wayne “Lodi” Lodholz Memorials.

Touring Stars Program Kicks Off In Style

The Touring Stars program got a boost with the announcement of three new sponsors teaming up to sponsor the program. DOC 360, i-gogs sunglasses, and Spiked Island Adult Lemonade have selected all the Touring Stars to create teams. Each sponsor will outfit the teams with crew uniforms and supply the team with their products and hero cards. This unique style of program will help with the marketability and visibility of the Touring Stars and help the fans by being more recognizable. Each sponsor will also pay $100 to the highest finishing of their team drivers.

The ARCA Midwest Tour presented by Scag Power Equipment and Lester Buildings prides itself on the development of the Touring Stars bonus program. This is an incentive for those drivers committed to running an entire season. This program has been key to the growth and development of the series and has evolved since the inception of the Midwest Tour in 2007.

The Touring Stars program is unique to and what separates the Midwest Tour from other Super Late Model short track touring series in the country. The idea behind the program is to create the marketing tools necessary to put the fans in the stands. It builds a personal connection with the current, hottest stars making them icon-worthy and more marketable.

The 2013 Touring Stars program will be taking it to a whole new level. With the addition of new sponsors and a new approach to the program, Touring Stars will have a personal sponsor-team relationship. This will create a brand identity between the teams and the sponsors. This broadens the marketing opportunities as fans not only connect with their favorite drivers, but now with the products they represent.

Steve Einhaus, Vice President of the ARCA Midwest Tour, is excited for what this new program will bring.

When the ARCA Midwest Tour presented by SCAG Power Equipment and Lester Buildings rolls into State Park Speedway on May 18th the Touring Stars will have their hands full not only with each other, but with a few local drivers who aim to steal a win away from them.

One of these local drivers will not be a surprise to anyone if he should happen to take the checkers once again.

Mark Mackesy is no stranger to State Park Speedway, nor is he a stranger to visiting Victory Lane at the famed quarter mile oval. Mackesy is a three time track champion (2008, ’09, ’11) and has won all three of the track’s signature events. He is a three time winner of the Larry Detjens Memorial (1999, 2006, 2012), and he has won both the Flip Merwin Memorial (2012) and the Wayne “Lodi” Lodholz Memorial (2009) once each. Mackesy also won the Midwest Tour event back in 2011

Despite all these accomplishments Mackesy knows that merely showing up will be no guarantee of winning again.

“It’s going to be really tough,” said Mackesy. “The talent in the series is the toughest in the nation. You look at all the track titles and feature wins that group has accumulated. It’s amazing!”

Mackesy would go on to rave about the competition that he is about to race side by side against on May 18th as well as wishing he could race with the ARCA Midwest Tour on a full time basis.

“I really like it. If I had the money I would run it,” said Mackesy. “The list of names is truly amazing. Wimmer, Bickle, Haseleu, Goede, Fredrickson, Holzhausen, Eilen, Morrissey, Hoffman, the Weinkauf brothers. The list goes on. It’s got drivers who have raced in NASCAR. This group has won races all over America.”

Mackesy should also be a member of that esteemed list, but is quick to point out that it is the help of his crew that gives him the chance to win every time he straps himself into the car.

“I’ve got a great crew chief in Tom Ress and a great pit crew,” said Mackesy. “Tommy’s very intelligent and the team leader. It also helps I grew up about five minutes from the track. I feel I grew up there. My brother and I pitted for my dad in the 80’s before I started racing there. Good local sponsors too.”

Mackesy knows that he will once again have his work cut out for him when the ARCA Midwest Tour comes to where he grew up. He is well aware that another Tour win will be another highly regarded win.

“If I could win another it would rank right up there with the last win in the Midwest Tour in ’11 and last year’s Detjens,” said Mackesy.

The ARCA Midwest Tour drivers will know they will have another threat to win when the green flag flies.

Qualifying will begin at 4:00pm with an Autograph session to follow from 5:00-5:30pm. Racing begins at 6:00pm. For complete race day details go to arcamidwesttour.com and click on Schedule.
